Founded in 1991 by a group of faith leaders, the organization has grown in numbers and strength and become synonymous with community and youth organizing and empowerment to bring about change in San Bernardino and Riverside counties.

Two years ago, Riverside resident Esther Ruvalcaba attended her first meeting of Inland Congregations United for Change. Almost immediately, she became a leader in the faith-based community-organizing group, and now she sits on its board of directors. Her quick rise is common in the organization, which encourages and trains residents to advocate for themselves and their communities on issues such as education, pollution control, the foreclosure crisis, immigration and health care.

Officials with the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency told an auditorium full of Mecca residents that they are investigating a soil-recycling plant for possible violations of federal hazardous waste regulations.

Wednesday night at the Coachella City Hall Chambers, ICUC leaders won permanent implementation of their 30 minute window recommendation for the towing of unlicensed drivers at sobriety checkpoints throughout Coachella, Thermal and Mecca from the Riverside County Sheriff’s Department which polices in Coachella. With partners Comite Latino and COFEM also present, ICUC leaders urged Coachella police and officials to implement the 30 minute window towing policy immediately and not just in cases of sobriety checkpoints but anytime a police officer is on patrol.
